Agile Organizations: 5 Distinctive Traits

What an agile organization is?

Agile organizations focus on responding quickly to changes in the market and to the customer’s needs, whether internal or external. These organizations operate in a highly collaborative environment, where decision-making is decentralized, and teams work together to efficiently and effectively achieve goals.

For a Project Manager, being part of an agile organization means adapting quickly to changes, being a teamwork player, and having an innovative mindset. In this article, we will explore the five distinctive traits of agile organizations, according to McKinsey, and how these traits apply to project management.

Characteristics of an Agile Organization

  1. Customer focus

The first distinctive characteristic of an agile organization is its focus on the customer. This means that the organization is constantly in tune with the customer’s needs and expectations and adjusts its operations to meet these needs effectively.

From the perspective of a Project Manager, this means having a deep understanding of the customer’s needs and ensuring that the project team is working closely with the customers to meet their expectations. Customer feedback is also critical to improve the product or service continuously.

  1. Flat organizational structure

Agile organizations have a flat and decentralized organizational structure. This means there are fewer hierarchy levels, and decision-making is distributed throughout the team. Collaboration and transparency are fundamental in this type of organization.

This means having an empowered project team capable of making quick decisions and working together to achieve goals. Additionally, the Project Manager should be available to provide guidance and support when needed, acting as a facilitator without hindering the decision-making process.

  1. Flexibility and speed

Flexibility and speed are key components of an agile organization. This means that the organization can quickly adapt to changes in the market and to customer needs, without compromising quality or efficiency.

It means having the ability to adjust the project plan and priorities based on changing customer and market needs. The Project Manager must also ensure that the project team has the necessary resources to effectively and efficiently meet the objectives.

  1. Teamwork and collaboration

Teamwork and collaboration are essential in an agile organization. Teams must work closely together to achieve objectives, and team members must be able to work in different areas of the organization as needed.

For a Project Manager, this means ensuring the project team has clear and effective communication and is willing to work together to achieve project goals. Additionally, the Project Manager should foster a culture of collaboration and be available to resolve conflicts and issues that may arise during the process.

  1. Innovation and experimentation

Innovation and experimentation are crucial in an agile organization. The organization must be willing to try new ideas and methods to continuously improve the quality of the product or service and effectively meet customer needs.

This means fostering an environment of innovation and experimentation within the project team. The Project Manager should encourage team members to propose new ideas and methods to achieve project goals and be willing to try new solutions to solve problems.

In addition to these five distinctive traits, other vital elements make an organization genuinely agile, such as process automation, the use of technology, and data-driven decision-making. The Project Manager must know these elements and work with the team to implement them effectively.

As can be seen, there is no reference to budget reduction. Still, the benefits associated with an agile organization are related to the speed of response and closeness to the end user. Economic benefits are obtained indirectly by allowing value to be delivered more quickly and adjusted to the customer’s present needs.

Final Words

In summary, being part of an agile organization as a Project Manager means adapting quickly to changes, working in teams, fostering innovation, and having a customer focus. These distinctive traits of an agile organization are fundamental to project management and customer satisfaction success.
